In an innovative move, the Ukrainian Danube Shipping private joint-stock company based in Izmail, Odesa Region, is gearing up to introduce barge container caravans along the Middle and Upper Danube.
The Ministry of Development of Communities, Territories, and Infrastructure recently announced this development, highlighting the company’s plan to offer container delivery services to Danube ports in Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Germany, as well as the Romanian port of Constanta.
Alongside transportation services, the company will facilitate storage and transshipment in Ukrainian ports, and organize transshipment at unloading ports.
Efforts are underway to engage carriers for the first caravans, with the state-owned company initiating consultations. Following a comprehensive repair program last year, the Ukrainian Danube Shipping currently boasts 25 operational units of the self-propelled fleet (with 20 in reserve) and over 200 barges. This robust infrastructure positions the company to efficiently intercept container flows from traditional vehicle routes.
Previously, the Ukrainian Danube Shipping Company unveiled its latest achievement: the construction of the second large-tonnage SLG barge.
As reported earlier by Ukrainian News Agency, this initiative underscores Ukraine’s commitment to enhancing its transportation networks and fostering closer ties with European partners.
